Overweight pets and pets with dark coats are susceptible to heat strokes. If you find your dog or cat to show signs of exhaustion and heavy panting, then get it bathed in cool water. You can also spray water over its body to cool the body. Not allowing the dog and other pets to play outside during the peak summertime every day is advisable. Some of the heat stroke signs you should be aware of are too much salivation, heavy panting, red tongue, lethargy, sluggishness, paleness and red gums. Also, feeding the pets will ample water during the summer is advisable.
Take your dogs to walk early in the morning or late in the evening during the summer months. You should never indulge in taking the dog for a walk during the peak sunshine. It is important to provide water for your dogs every 30 minutes when you are trekking or hiking during the summer time. Most dogs and pets that feel the heat would plop its face in the water to cool it. Give it some breathing and resting time during long hikes.
