Poor Dugongs and Turtles
The Liberal National Party (LNP) has announced that a policy to tighten laws to prevent the cruelty to dugongs and sea turtles in far north Queensland. Traditional landowners can hunt dugongs and sea turtles for non-commercial use apparently under the Native Title Act.
But LNP leader John-Paul Langbroek says that this has left the animals exposed to harmful cruelty. RSPCA Tracey Jackson says they have encountered some really horrific cases.
“Cutting them up whilst they’re still alive, and leaving them to bake in the sun,” she said.
Mr Langbroek says the LNP would make it illegal for traditional hunters to wound, mutilate or torture an animal, with these kinds of penalties – up to two years in jail or a $200,000 fine.
